BOSMC -
Brisbane Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Clinic
Dr Friis has worked at Brisbane Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre (BOSMC) since it was founded in 1989.
The clinic is located on the 6th floor (Wickham Terrace street level) of the Brisbane Private Hospital. Brisbane Private Imaging is also on the same floor, with MRI facilities on the 5th floor.
The hospital has private consulting suites for a great number of orthopaedic surgeons covering all sub specialities. Consultation, diagnosis, imaging and referral can all be arranged under the one roof.
Background
Dr Friis was educated at the University of Queensland and was awarded a Fellowship of the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians in 1991.
He has had a long association with the Human Movements Department at the University of Queensland. As an appointed Senior Lecturer, his roles include: undergraduate teaching, Masters in Sports Medicine - Course Convenor, and active involvement with research projects. This involvement requires constant reviewing and updating of academic material relevant to common clinical problems.
Welcome
Peter Friis has been involved with Sports Medicine since 1984.
Sports Medicine involves the holistic medical care of the active individual. It often involves the investigation and management of musculoskeletal injury and conditions often exacerbated by activity.
For the aging population, activity is no longer considered a bonus, but rather a necessity. Also, the "Industrial Athlete" is a term recently used to identify that work-related problems are similar to sporting injuries.
Not all damaged or degenerative joints are the same, and the specificity of diagnosis that is expected from high powered investigation now warrants a bespoke approach to treatment options. A Sports and Exercise Physician takes this "all-inclusive" view and is well placed to offer advice on a variety of management options.
Dr Friis started his Sports Medicine apprenticeship as team doctor for Brothers Rugby League and was there for the 1987 QRL Grand Final.
The following year he became the inaugural team doctor for a new team in Queensland, The Brisbane Broncos. He received a Gold Membership for 20 years' service in 2008 and continues to be involved now with the Broncos emerging talent and development squad.
Peter was appointed Queensland Academy of Sport Volleyball doctor in 2017.
Management and education of young athletes is a special interest. Development of an online education website for emerging talent squads is a current project. Self help for the young athlete on matters of injury management and prevention underpin this.
